What's going to happen next on Buffy? (aka Do you have any spoilers?)
I don't know. I usually try to avoid spoilers and details about upcoming episodes outside of basic information like episode titles, upcoming air dates, and short "TV Guide"-like descriptions. Besides, anything I have heard is probably the same stuff you've heard; since I'm not involved in the show, I don't have official information. To get the same information I get, try TV Guide or Zap2it. Why do reruns air intermittently during the season?
In the US, network television sticks to a system wherein each "season," they debut new shows and air new episodes of continuing shows. Each season runs from late September/early October through the end of May. (Summer is then filled with mostly reruns, specials, etc.) Thus, the season is roughly 36 weeks long. The standard amount of episodes for a network TV show to produce each season is about 22. So, with about 22 episodes to air over the course of about 36 weeks, each show ends up with roughly 14 weeks of reruns per season. These are generally spread out over the course of the season — December, January, and March tend to be most rerun-heavy. (November, February, and May are "sweeps" months, when the ratings are more important and used to determine advertising rates, and thus the networks generally air new episodes during those months to attract viewers.)If you look at the Episode Lists for previous seasons, you can take note of the original airdate of each episode to get a feel for how this system plays out over the course of a season.

Are there going to be more seasons of Buffy?
No. Season 7 finished in the US on May 20, 2003. See the Episode Guide. (For the UK, Sky One finished Season 7 on June 12, 2003. BBC will air it... sometime. Dunno when.)However, this is not necessarily the end of the Buffyverse. Angel has been renewed for a 5th season, and there is a chance that there will be another spinoff, perhaps next Fall or even later. Originally, a Faith spinoff seemed most likely, but Eliza Dushku signed on to do a show for Fox (Tru Calling), so that's out. Still, Joss and the other writers have confirmed that they are still discussing the possibilities. If any news develops, it will be reported in the News Bytes.

Is Buffy in syndication (reruns)? When?
Yes. The cable network FX purchased syndication rights to Buffy some time back. They began airing episodes on September 24th, 2001. They currently air BtVS repeats at 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. every weeknight, and they repeat each night's episodes the next weekday morning at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. FX keeps their own handy schedule on their Buffy page — Click here to view the FX episode schedule (once there, click on "Full Schedule").Aside from FX, local (non-cable) stations have the opportunity to buy rights to air reruns as well. These may or may not be WB affiliates or UPN affiliates. I'm not even going to try to keep track of all the local stations nationwide airing reruns. You can easily find out on your own:
- You can visit a TV listings site such as TV Guide or Zap2it, where you can enter your zip code and search your local listings for the phrase "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
- Buffy Weekends — A Fox-owned website which will tell you at what time(s) you can find BtVS reruns on your local channels on the weekends. Just click on "TV Listings" once you enter the site, choose your state from the list, and look for your city/one of your local stations.
On what channel can I watch Buffy? (aka When will Buffy and/or Angel be airing in my country?)
As flattered as I am that you consider me to be all-knowing, I unfortunately am not. I do not have memorized every affiliate which carries UPN programming. To find out if you have a UPN affiliate in your area, go to UPN's official site here, click on "Stations" on the left, and choose your state from the dropdown list. If you don't have an affiliate in your area, start calling and/or writing to your local cable company requesting that they obtain UPN programming. (Please don't email me about this — sorry, but I honestly cannot help you.)You can also go to a TV listings site such as TV Guide or Zap2it, where you can enter your zip code and then search your personalized listings for Buffy. Occasionally, non-UPN affiliated stations may carry a few UPN programs, so even if you don't have a UPN affiliate, you may still be able to watch Buffy, though perhaps not at the regularly scheduled time. Search the aforementioned sites to find out.
As for Buffy and Angel airing in countries besides the US, I'm even less help. To check your local listings in the UK, try using DigiGuide, the powerful TV listing software that I use and recommend. Right-click here to download (2.3 MB). Elswhere, you may wish to try to find a searchable TV listings site for your country — for example, if you live in France, try searching Google for the phrase "tv listings France." If you find a good site, search for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and see if you get any results. If that doesn't help, I would suggest calling/emailing/writing to the station on which you currently watch Buffy (assuming you have such a station), and asking them your questions. If they don't know the answer, perhaps they can refer you to someone who does. Other than that, try posting your question (and your location) in message boards (such as ours, The Watcher's Diary) and newsgroups (try Google Groups), where other people from your area may see your post and be able to help you.
EDIT: I can give you some UK information: Sky One started airing Season 7 of Buffy and Season 4 of Angel in January 2003. The shows pair up at 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. Thursday nights. BBC2 began airing Season 6 in November 2002. You UK-ers can search your local TV listings using DigiGuide, the powerful TV listing software that I use and recommend. Where can I get episodes on video or DVD?
See the Merchandise section for details on which episodes are available on VHS and DVD and direct links to purchase them (includes information for the US and the UK). In the US, a rather small selection of episodes has been released so far on VHS, and complete seasons are being released on DVD. You can purchase online from such retailers as Amazon.com, or you can buy them at pretty much any store that sells a decent selection of videos/DVDs (Target, Blockbuster, Tower, etc.). Please be aware that as soon as I have any further information on videos or DVDs, I will report it in the News Bytes and the Merchandise section.If you're looking for episodes that haven't yet been released in the US, it obviously won't be as easy, and it could be illegal — keep that in mind. BuffyGuide.com does not condone any illegal activities, and takes no responsibility for your actions. That said... you can often find videotapes and VCDs for sale on eBay.com (or eBay.co.uk).
If you live in an area that uses PAL format VHS or Region 2 DVD (such as the UK), you might want to check out Amazon.co.uk or Sendit.com — they sell episodes released in the UK, which includes video box sets of all six seasons and DVD box sets of the first four seasons. (Again, the Merchandise section has full details.) You can order them worldwide, but if your VCR plays NTSC (which it does if you're in the US or Canada) or your DVD player plays Region 1 DVDs (which it does if you're in the US or Canada), you won't be able to watch them without some hassle and/or expense. (Please see the the question/answer below for more information.)
If you're a desperate American, you could order British videos or British DVDs. However, it's not as simple as just buying and watching, because we use different formats than they do in the UK — you'll need to read the information below in the question/answer "What's all this NTSC/PAL/Region 1/Region 2 nonsense?." Once you understand it, you'll then need to obtain the proper equipment (multi-region DVD player, VHS convertor, or worldwide VCR) or find a service that will convert videotapes for you. Where can I download episodes or find transcripts?
Please note that downloading full episodes may be illegal — keep that in mind. BuffyGuide.com does not condone any illegal activities, and takes no responsibility for your actions. Fox (the company that owns the BtVS copyrights) shut down a handful of sites with episode downloads, and forced other sites to remove the downloads. There are still sites with full episodes available for download, but I do not currently know of any personally. Try searching at Google Google Groups. There is also a newsgroup (alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer) on which you can find episodes; you'll need a newsreader (such as GrabIt) for this. You can also find episodes for download using file sharing software such as Kazaa Lite. Side note: If you install or have previously installed any file-sharing software (aside from Kazaa Lite, which is free of spyware), you should download and run Ad-Aware to check for and remove possible spyware.Transcripts are available at Psyche's Transcripts (for both Buffy and Angel). They also have shooting scripts. (A shooting script is the actual script used for filming, written by the episode's writer; a transcript is a transcription of what actually aired on TV, usually done by a fan). Why do some other countries get Buffy DVDs before the US?
As many of you know, countries such as the UK and Australia get Buffy and Angel DVD box sets before they're released in the US. This is to do with the way our system works. In the US, once a show airs (or is sure to air) for about 5 seasons, it's sold into syndication. This means that, for example, Fox sells the rights to air reruns to buyers such as FX. My understanding is that production companies generally don't begin to see a profit on a show until they sell it into syndication.Anyway, Fox is a business, and the point of a business is to make money. Ditto for buyers like FX. Now, networks/stations thinking about buying syndication rights for a show obviously want to get their money's worth. If they pay loads of $$ for syndication rights, but people can buy full seasons on DVD (and/or video), then that's less people watching the reruns on TV, and that's money down the drain.
So, Fox couldn't sell Buffy DVDs until FX got a headstart on showing the reruns they paid for. (And in this case, FX had already paid, or at least signed a contract at an agreed price, before the subject of DVDs came up. When Fox said they were going to sell DVDs, FX basically said, "Not until we get a headstart and get our money's worth!", and understandably so.) Additionally, FX is owned by NewsCorp, which also owns Fox (and lots of other media outlets). So besides Fox playing fair with FX, they also don't want to cost their mutual parent company money.
Other countries don't have this whole syndication thing. This means that there's no need to wait so long before releasing DVDs. So they can have DVDs before we can. (But we get to see each new season on television long before they do.)
Of course, this whole box set thing is relatively new to the marketplace. In time, production companies like Fox may discover that it's actually more profitable to sell DVDs sooner, and sell the syndication rights for much cheaper. I kind of doubt it, though.
Video (VHS) box sets are also available in some other countries. The reason they could be released there before here is the same as above, obviously. However, Fox could release VHS sets here in the US now, along with the DVDs. As of yet, there are no signs that they'll be doing so; I don't know why that is.

What's all this NTSC/PAL/Region 1/Region 2 nonsense?
VHS (video tapes): Most countries of the world use TV Standards that are incompatible with other countries. For example, a video recording made in the UK cannot be played back on a standard American VCR or shown on an American television. There are three main standards — NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. NTSC (National Television System Committee) was the first color TV broadcast system, and is used by many countries on the American continent (i.e. US, Canada, Mexico), as well as many Asian countries including Japan. NTSC runs on 525 lines/frame and has a refresh rate of 60Hz. The PAL (Phase Alternating Line) standard is used in most European countries except for France. PAL runs on 625 lines/frame and has a refresh rate of 50Hz. The SECAM (Sequential Couleur Avec Memoire or Sequential Colour with Memory) standard is used in France. SECAM uses the same bandwidth as PAL but transmits the colour information sequentially. SECAM runs on 625 lines/frame. (See Useful Links below.)
These standards affect both your VCR and your television. For example, if you (an American) were to buy a British VCR, thinking you could play British videos on it, you would find it useless, as your TV wouldn't know what to do with it. For this reason, if you want to watch foreign videos in America, you need either a VCR and a TV that can play two (or more) standards, a "World Wide" VCR that actually converts the signal so your TV can play it, or you need to convert the foreign tapes to NTSC tapes. Neither method will necessarily be easy or cheap. (See Useful Links below.)
DVD: The Region encoding principle was created to prevent discs of the latest movies reaching countries where that particular film had not been released yet. Region encoding is basically a digital flag on the disc that tells the DVD player where it comes from. This then prevents the disc from being used by an incompatible player in another country. It is possible to "chip" a DVD player, or buy one already chipped, which allows it to play discs from any region. However, don't forget your TV! Once again, even if you have a "region-free" DVD player, your TV probably won't know what to do with the signal, unless you've got a model that actually converts the signal (i.e. from NTSC to PAL or vice versa). You may have better luck playing foreign DVDs on your computer. PC monitors run at a higher refresh rate than televisions, and therefore can handle any standard. Your average DVD-ROM will only allow you to switch Regions a few times, but many can be "hacked" or "patched" to disable the limit. (See Useful Links below.)

To this, I must say no. Did a teacher or parent ever tell you, "If I did [such and such] for you, I'd have to do it for everyone else, too"? Well, that's one of my big reasons, too. It would be very time consuming to buy, copy, and mail the tapes, plus the hassle of making the appropriate arrangements. I get so many requests for this that I would never have time to actually work on the site if I said yes to all of them. So, I simply must say no to all requests, even the ones that are only for one episode. Another big reason is that little thing about it being illegal. There is some debate over whether or not it's illegal if you're not selling for cash profit, but I don't want to end up as a defendant in the court case that answers that question. My sincere apologies for my inability to help with this.

Is there a DVD or CD soundtrack for "Once More with Feeling" (the musical episode)?
There is no DVD of "Once More with Feeling" commercially available in North America, though there is in the UK (details here).
(If you think you might just buy the British DVD, first read about region encoding above.) It's not known whether there will be a separate DVD release for this episode in the US, but it will of course be included in the Season 6 box set, whenever that's released. A special DVD was made and distributed with certain subscription copies of the Daily Variety to promote the episode in hopes of an Emmy nomination, and may have been distributed via other means as well. You may be able to find some of these DVDs (as well as copies of them and homemade discs) for sale on eBay — try the following search: Buffy Once More With Feeling.The official CD soundtrack was released on September 24, 2002. Yes, the character of Buffy returned for Season 6, and is still portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar. What's the deal with the move to UPN?
In April 2001, UPN bought the rights to air 44 episodes (2 seasons) of Buffy, reportedly paying roughly $2.3 million per episode (substantially more than the WB's reported offer of $1.6 million, and more than twice the original price tag of $1 million), for a total of $102 million.I've archived some of Joss' comments about the move (posted at the former official site's posting board) here. Despite previous comments made by Sarah Michelle Gellar's that she would only stick with the show if it stayed on the WB (which she later retracted), she was contracted to stay on through Season 7 and did not attempt to get out of her contract.

What was the deal with those postponed episodes, "Earshot" and "Graduation Day, Part Two"?
On April 20, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado, two teenage boys committed mass murder at their high school (Columbine High School), injuring many and killing 13 before killing themselves. This, understandably, sent the nation into an uproar. "Earshot" was scheduled to air just one week later, but in the episode, Buffy and the gang find out about a plot to commit mass murder at school, and must prevent it from happening. Due to the content, and a few lines in particular, the WB decided it would be best not to air this episode so soon after the tragedy in Colorado; Joss Whedon supported the decision. The episode was finally aired on September 21, 1999.
Also due to this incident, as well as a number of "copycat" incidents, a last minute decision was made to postpone the second part of the third season finale, "Graduation Day, Part Two," although it had already aired in parts of Canada. (Joss wasn't so supportive of this, telling fans to "bootleg the puppy.") The WB eventually aired "GD2" on July 13th, 1999. Both of these episodes are available in the Episode List.

Site Questions
Can I use content from your site on my own site?
The answer to this depends on each particular situation, but there are some guidelines to consider before you ask. The first, of course, is that you must ask first! All of the original content of this site is owned and copyrighted by myself or former webmasters, and to use it without permission would be illegal (and rude). We do like to surf other Buffy sites (and fans of this site often alert us to these things), so don't assume we'll never know about it.Aside from that, we're not completely opposed to sharing some content, depending on the circumstances. If you plan to have your "own" episode guide and you ask to use our synopses, Monstervision, and images, you can bet that I'm going to say no. If you just want to use a couple of images or a couple of goofs from an episode, I'll almost certainly say yes. Basically, the more you want to use, the less enthused I'll be about the idea. Surely you can understand — I spend a lot of time, hard work, and money on this site, and while I want as many people as possible to read the content, I like it best when they read it here, at the source. I put all that time, work, and money into making my site better, not yours. If you're looking to use something big, such as the extended synopses for every episode, be prepared to give me a very good reason why you shouldn't simply link to the content here.
Speaking of links, once I have given you permission, keep in mind that I do expect credit with a link. It should be in a visible location, along the lines of: "Thanks goes to BuffyGuide.com for use of the episode goofs [or what have you]!" The title of the site should be a link to the main page (http://www.buffyguide.com). And remember that you must, must, must upload items such as images and sound files to your own site!! To direct link to them on my own site is to steal my server's bandwidth, which I have to pay a lot of money for, and I will be very upset when I catch you (and yes, I can easily catch you, through use of the site statistics and log files). When will _________ (the newest episode) be posted?
This is one of the most frustrating questions you can ask (so please don't). To put it simply — when I'm done with it. I do not know in advance when exactly it will be done; I may finish at 4 a.m. Friday morning, or 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon — you get the idea. As soon as I'm done, I post it, so if it's not there (even after you hit reload or refresh at the Episode List), then it's not done. I work on it as much as I can during the days after the episode airs, but I also have other life obligations to deal with. Many, many hours go into putting the guides together. My general policy is not to post anything until everything is ready. The more time I spend answering this question, the less time I'm working on the page, so if you ask this question, I will simply refer you here (or ignore you). Why don't you have an Angel episode guide or section?
It is simply not feasible for me to do an Angel episode guide. I do not have the time or inclination to do so. As far as why there is no Angel section in the site — it's a Buffy site. I usually watch Angel, but I'd rather spend my energy making a damn good Buffy site than a site that covers both shows, but doesn't do a good job on either. There are lots of sites devoted to Angel, and many of them are quite good. You can find links in the Link Database (in the General Sites/Angel category). Why don't you have screen caps for all the episodes?
The old site owners did not get screen caps for the episodes; this feature is something that Jeremy and I began soon after we took over the site. Therefore, any episode before "Helpless" does not have a page of images. In answer to what is surely your next question: I cannot, at this time, go back and get screen caps for the old episodes for two reasons: 1) I simply don't have time and 2) I don't even have all of the episodes on tape, and many of the ones I do have are poor quality. What's with the banners on the site?
This site is very large and very heavily trafficked, and therefore costs a lot of money to run. Why are some reviews by Brian and Will, some by Jamie Marie and Jeremy, and some by Jamie Marie, Elliot, and Soupytwist?
Brian and Will are the original owners and creators of the site. At one point they decided they could no longer keep up with it, and rather than see it die, Jamie and Jeremy asked if we could take over for them. We began with "Amends" (12/15/98). All episodes before that one have reviews from Brian and Will, and the content of those episode guides were written by them. All episodes after (and including) "Amends" have reviews and content written by us. EDIT: Jeremy ceased any involvement with the site in late 2000; Jamie writes all content and does all updates.
