I like 'em firm to the touch, with a nice even colour, nothing worse that a soft 'un, all spotty and limp.

The problem is, no matter when you believe them to be best*, they remain in that state for a window of, like, 4 minutes.

That's why I never buy a bunch. I buy single bananas, at different stages of ripeness. That way they're not all ripe on the same day.

Similar to mouse, I buy them in stages.
We buy 9 green, 6 green tipped, and five or so yellow.
They are best about six minutes before the first freckle will appear.
We also freeze many many bananas and do shakes with them, so we're not fussed about the freckles or a bit of brown. Plus between the three of us we eat about 4 bananas a day.

It is cute because of the third one, isn't it? That new third member of our family makes everything cute. Even smushed up banana being crammed in his pie-hole (as we like to call it) as he toddles down the hallway screeching at the kitties.

I LOATHE bananas. They're long, and fruit shouldn't be long. They taste fluffy. And you shouldn't eat anything fluffy.
