Why, I oughta . . .

Itajime shibori is created by pleating, folding, clamping, and dyeing fabric to create repeat patterns.

Ah, that explains it.......not that I'm any the wiser.

What is the result used for, clothes, bed spreads?

I would guess that it requires skill, artistry, patience, etc, none of which i possess.
:(

It doesn't require all that much skill, artistry, or patience, which is why I like it, since I'm not endowed with a great deal of any of those fine characteristics. And it can be applied to anything, although squares of fabric are the most satisfying for a compulsivish person such as I, because they lend themselves to more symmetrical folding. Today, for example, I'm going to be doing a lot of test handkerchiefs to make sure I can produce some lovely ones for an Internet acquaintance to whom I owe a return gift (he made me a cross stitch of my personal motto, "People are stupid, and there is no hope," in return for which I had said I'd make him baked goods; dyeing hankies will be much more fun).

All in all, it's a way for a not-terribly-creative person to make some pretty things.

Here are links to some pictures of the kind of designs it produces:

There. More than you ever wanted, I'm sure. That's what obsession does to one.

Ah, what is also known as tie-dying?

It is a form of tie-dyeing, but tie-dyeing, American (i.e., hippie) style, cannot compare to shibori, which is far more complicated and precise. Itajime is perhaps the easiest form of shibori.
