Buffy Heading Back To The Big Screen

26 May 2009 5:10 AM, PDT

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is heading back to the big screen with a new movie based on the hit franchise.

The character, most famously played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the hit TV series, was originally introduced in the 1992 movie of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson.

The following TV show ran for six years before coming to an end in 2003.

And now the blood-sucking series could be heading back to the big screen with a brand new vampire slayer.

Director Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original film and executive produced the TV programme, owns the rights to the Buffy brand and is planning to reboot the franchise for cinemas, replacing Gellar and the rest of the cast with new actors to fight demons in a different generation.

Kuzui tells the Hollywood Reporter, "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."

Okay - so - if this is true :o just because I don't want them to recast this - at least not yet - I mean, keep a few and kill a few and fill in with the new... or, I'm getting triggered for nothing - wouldn't be the first time!

This was posted on Entertainment Weekly today:

A Joss Whedon-less 'Buffy' movie: Worst idea ever of the year

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the rights holders of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- which began as the 1992 crapmound film starring Kristy Swanson and was later transformed by writer Joss Whedon into one of the touchstone TV series of the last 25 years -- are planning a remake/relaunch. Now, fans of the Buffyverse have been clamoring for a feature extension ever since the show's end in 2003; and they've made the Whedon-overseen comic books best sellers. Whedon has long been the hand on the wheel of the Buffy franchise, and his cultish fanbase are legion.
That raucous sound you hear is that fanbase currently consulting an engineer to figure out exactly how to support all of the hell they're gonna raise. Because -- get this -- Whedon isn't involved. AT ALL.
According to the news item, the producers aren't against the idea of Whedon's involvement, but they haven't "reached out to him." What's more, this new "film" would have no connection with the TV series, nor would it feature any of the show's robust supporting cast. In other words, they'd be jettisoning everything and everyone that made Buffy work. I swear, sometimes it's as if Hollywood sets out with "failure" plugged right into the GPS.
The only reason that Buffy remains a viable franchise is because of the rabid, happy-to-purchase fanbase. And the only reason that fanbase exists is because of Joss Whedon. (There are actually t-shirts out there with "Joss Whedon is my master now" printed on them.) Why leave all that money on the table simply to make a shoddy Twilight-lite? Because there's no way those fans would turn out if Whedon wasn't involved -- what's more, they'd actively work to undermine it in every way possible.
Clearly, Joss has more Buffy stories to tell. Why not let him? Would you go see this film without Joss Whedon at the helm? Vote in our poll. Sound off in the comments section.

Getting a fair amount of press...

Hmmmm...

If they want to make a vampire slayer movie, then they should just make it. Don't go calling it "Buffy" if it clearly isn't.

Hmph.

Kuzui tells the Hollywood Reporter, "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."
In other words, Star Trek made a lot of money.

Seems to me they should look at how the Star Trek movie courted rather than pissing off franchise fans as well as new viewers.

Director Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original film and executive produced the TV programme, owns the rights to the Buffy brand and is planning to reboot the franchise for cinemas,
What does an executive producer produce if he's not involved in the creative process?

Should this director inform us that he's a fanboy of the show and squee a little live on camera (ick), I might feel like I could have fun with Buffy the new generation, as long as a few winks and nudges are thrown my way/the fans way.

Shame if her names Buffy again. Couldn't they create a new name for the film, but market it with "Directed by a Buffy and Joss Whedon fanboy. Joss Whedon is his master now" stamped all over the posters and trailers. I'm sure Joss would approve. He's powerless if this guy owns the rights. Hey, Fran could recruit the legendary Chris Beck to compose the films soundtrack.

a few extra deep thoughts:

1. Buffy without Joss. Fine.
2. Buffy without SMG. Fine.
3. Buffy without Buffy as we know her. Dunno, hang on, I can't even remember which Buffy I know. Maybe I'm not fine without Joss... or SMG.... maybe I am.... AAaaaaaaaaaaaarrrghhhh
4. Buffy with rebooted Buffy who might not even be called Buffy, and the guy rebooting Buffy directed the old Buffy before the old Buffy reboot so he's rerebooting Buffy. Um, I believe a great man called Xander once said...wwwhat?

One last thing....

A lower budget "Twilight-lite" Buffy is surely good news. The vamps sparkle like diamonds in Twilight. My sister has confirmed this.

And here is one of my many "things" with this:

Fran directed the first movie. Do we not remember how fucking awful that was? Why would we want a second dose of that?

What is it with these egotistical loons who think they can do it better than the only one who actually SUCCEEDED at doing it at all?

big, big sighs from here.

I mean, at LEAST have Giles roll up in a wheelchair from being old and cratchedy since we'd have to jump this bitch forward at LEAST 20 years in order to make it remotely plausible without Buff and the gang. Giles would have the big hatchet that should have actually taken off his head in that season 7 episode in his hand, and explain to some half-wit slayer replacement how its all just works the same way regardless of what loins she sprung from, and that she, too will fall for a vampire with a soul, earned or cursed, because that's how it works in the verse - sort of like an "Andrew" type rant, but with an age-ed irritable Giles sit and spinning through the first few minutes of the new neverland.

And having Angel show up as a connection wouldn't suck - Faith too, since they are both on FOX shows and isn't Fran associated with FOX still?

I'd miss SMG in the role for sure, can't recast her, I mean, really. But I would hate having an actress who has bigger and better acting chops than Sarah has/had.

Just no Dawn. I repeat: No DAWN! I will have to participate in a planned riot if they brought her back - even if Trachtenberg is "of" the generation.
