True Blood?

A temporary board while I'm working out issues with the real WD.

The posts made here will not appear on the real WD when it re-opens.

Please note that I won't be providing any technical support for this board, as I would prefer to focus my attention on fixing the other board. So, if you're confused by anything, just try to figure things out, search the phpBB forums, ask other users for help, or just bear with it.

Are you saying it shows Anna Paquin's gratuitous titties? [/drool]

I've said this exact same thing about ... oh, at least four or five times.

OK, I'm writing a blog post about the show (we've watched 3 of I think 4 episodes so far) which may or may not be more in-depth, but I have one question that only you guys can answer.

This show is total trash, right?

I mean, there are a couple of excellent performances and several perfectly acceptable ones, and everyone is attractive and it looks good (photography, FX) (except the teeth, oh my god), but.

It's supposed to be bad, right? RIGHT?

Ok, I'll try to reply without going all lusty over the skimpy I'm-so-innocent-fuck-me-now outfits Anna keeps wearing (I seem to kill too many threads with my oversexedness).

So far, I don't really know what to make of this show or if it's any good- but I keep watching anyway. And I think it's not just because of the outfits I mentioned. It's got some fun characters and a few somewhat interesting plot points developing (Who's really killing the girls? Just what is Sam- besides the obvious?
woof-woof) but it's also extremely trashy and kinda over the top bad. I mean- do ALL the vampires have to be some flavor of bad vampire caricature? And those fangs! Seriously?

So why do I keep watching? I think it's because it IS trashy but it seems to revel in it's trashiness. And it looks quite yummy doing it (NOW the outfits come into it). Plus, it IS vampires (ridiculous fangs or not) which obviously anybody reading this here already has a weakness for. I think the show works because it's not trying to be anything other than a guilty pleasure. It's a trashy romance novel- with vampires- and it knows it.

Now, I haven't read or even seen the books it's based on, but I imagine they would fit right in with all the other bad bodice rippers on the shelf- right along with the Twilight books. Twilight would be at the sappy romance (and angsty, beautiful vampires/whatevers) end of the shelf and True Blood is at the hyperbolic passion/corny sex euphymisms (and sexy, intense vampires) end. But it's fun to watch and only groan-inducingly bad on occasion. Plus its got just the right amount of gratuitous nudity so I'll keep tuning in.

But those fangs! Oh gods they are bad!

Actually we don't have HBO so we haven't seen this, though been quite curious since hubby and I have read the books for a while. Haven't kept up with them all, but the first few were quite fun. I didn't really put them in the "romance" category -- though there's quite a bit of it. Sookie is actually quite intelligent and level headed in the book. It does sort of develop into the "every guy of every possible supernatural breed falls hopelessly for her" line, which is a bit aggravating, but since it was only about the second series I had read where this happened, I didn't feel so much like it was falling into a trend as creating it. (I'm enjoying Patricia Briggs Mercy series too, but the same thing is happening there -- the main character is intelligent, tough, has her own slight "otherness" -- and always has 3 guys circling her.) I'm almost not wanting to watch the series -- I actually like Anna Panquin but she's not my vision of Sookie -- and I think the series is notching up the love scenes greatly from the book (though there are some good ones in the books).

Any way -- maybe I'll get to see it someday. Can't afford to add to my DISH bill right now and I'm following too many shows already (Heroes, Eureka, Burn Notice, Doctor Who, Mythbusters and Top Gear).
