My limited understanding suggests it was a one-or-the-other deal - and from the four episodes of Dollhouse I've seen so far, they backed the wrong horse.

If all you watched was the first four than you really need to keep going. It gets much better once Fox finally stops meddling and lets Joss do his thing.
